European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
