In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
